Get a decent 10% saving at top retailers worldwide, then buy gifts cards from them (e.g. Amazon gift cards)

[Check out the revised version of this article]

Edit: This offer was originally from May — June 2020, but has been extended to September 2020!

Overview

  • Within the Crypto.com app, you can purchase Tesco or Sainsbury’s gift cards and you receive 10% cashback (other retailers are available worldwide, I’m familiar with these UK retailers. See the end of this article for supported countries)
  • In retailers such as Tesco or Sainsbury’s, you can purchase Amazon gift cards, effectively getting them at a 10% discount
  • This saving is only available until 30th June 2020, after which cashback will still be available, but at a lower rate

Note:

  • I have used this method to purchase Tesco gift cards via the Crypto.com app, then Amazon gift cards from within a Tesco store
  • If you want to purchase Amazon gift cards from other stores, you should verify that the stores allow this buy checking their terms and conditions, or try buying a small amount
  • The gift cards are received immediately upon payment, from within the Crypto.com app. The cashback is also paid instantly
  • Some of the gift cards (including Tesco and Sainsbury’s) can only be used in-store

Evidence that this works

Here’s a receipt showing that on 21st July 2020, I converted a £200 Tesco voucher to a £200 Amazon voucher:

On 21st July 2020, I converted a £200 Tesco voucher to a £200 Amazon voucher

Here’s how to do it

Register an account on Crypto.com

This is free, plus if you later decide to stake 50 MCO you will get $50 in MCO, plus optionally a free debit card which offers (for as long as you stake the 50 MCO):

  • 2% cashback on all purchases
  • Free Spotify Premium
  • I’ll write an article on the card soon, follow me for updates!

Stake 10,000 CRO (optional)

  • You can skip this step if you are happy with 5% cashback. You can stake at any time
  • CRO is a cryptocurrency which was created by Crypto.com for the usage of its services.
  • To save 10% you have to stake 10,000 CRO (about £487 GBP, 549 EUR, $609 USD as of 26th April 2020) for 3 months. You can earn up to 20% interest when staking CRO. See their Earn page and support page ‘Crypto Earn — How does it work?’ for details
  • See how CRO has been performing

Check the Cashback Offer

From the Crypto.com app:

  1. Select the Crypto.com logo (bottom, middle of the screen — it looks like a lion)
  2. Select ‘Pay’
  3. Select ‘Gift Cards’
  4. Select ‘Shop Now’
  5. Select Tesco, Sainsbury’s (or another retailer offering 10% cashback, who also sell Amazon gift cards)
  6. You will see the confirmation on how much cashback you will get (i.e. 10%)

Buy CRO (for gift card payment)

  1. From the Crypto.com app, select ‘Wallet’
  2. Select ‘CRO (crypto.com)’
  3. Select ‘Buy’
  4. Enter and purchase an amount of CRO

Note that until the end of June 2020, there are no fees for using a debit or credit card to purchase cryptocurrency.

Buy the gift card

From the Crypto.com app:

  1. Select the Crypto.com logo (bottom, middle of the screen)
  2. Select ‘Pay’
  3. Select ‘Gift Cards’
  4. Select ‘Shop Now’
  5. Select Tesco, Sainsbury’s (or another retailer offering 10% cashback, who also sell Amazon gift cards)
  6. Check the amount of cashback being offered
  7. Enter the amount you would like to purchase
  8. Select ‘Pay’
  9. Select the CRO wallet
  10. Select ‘Continue’
  11. Payment and receipt of the gift card will be instant. The card will appear in the app. When you select it, it opens in your web browser
  12. You can use the gift card from within your web browser or print it. I have even sent my wife the URL and she has been able to use it from the web browser on her phone

Managing the cashback

  1. You will get the cashback (as CRO) immediately
  2. You can keep it as CRO, or convert it into another currency (fiat or crypto)
  3. If you have the minimum value available (e.g. at least 10,000 CRO), you can stake it in the Earn section of the Crypto.com app for immediate or long-term holdings, to earn interest

Supported Countries

This list of countries has been gathered from https://help.crypto.com/en/articles/3073295-gift-cards

  • Argentina (ARS)
  • Australia (AUD)
  • Belgium (EUR)
  • Brazil (BRL)
  • Canada (CAD)
  • France (EUR)
  • Germany (EUR)
  • Ireland (EUR)
  • Italy (EUR)
  • Japan (JPY)
  • Netherlands (EUR)
  • Philippines (PHP)
  • Qatar (QAR)
  • Saudi Arabia (SAR)
  • Singapore (SGD)
  • Spain (EUR)
  • UAE (AED)
  • UK (GBP)
  • US (USD)

Some of their recent blog posts have stated the addition of support in these countries:

  • Austria
  • Denmark — including CDON, matas and MANGO.
  • Finland — CDON, Zalando, and Nike
  • India — including Big Bazaar, Croma and Flipkart
  • Sweden — including CDON, Nextory and Ticketmaster.

Additional Notes

Since writing this initial article, some stores available via the Crypto.com Pay (gift cards) are now also available via the Crypto.com MCO Visa Debit Card.

Spending with the card is better in many ways because:

  • You have some buyers guarantee (e.g. £100,000 worth if you use your MCO Card in conjunction with your Curve card)
  • You don’t need to go through the process of buying gift cards for each retailer
  • You pay with a single card (or contactless device). With the gift cards, you have to find and display each purchased gift card separately
  • You don’t have to keep track of how much money you have on each partially used gift card
  • You don’t lose out on any potential (albeit very minimal) loss from buying CRO and then buying the gift card

However, with the card, you can only earn up to $50 cashback per calendar month.
